NATIONAL BESTSELLER

For readers of Atomic HabitsDeep Work, and Peak comes a game-changing approach to mastering new skills and succeeding faster。

For generations, we’ve been taught there are two ways to succeed—either from talent or practice。 In Decoding Greatness, award-winning social psychologist Ron Friedman illuminates a powerful third path—one that has quietly launched icons in a wide range of fields, from artists, writers, and chefs, to athletes, inventors, and entrepreneurs: reverse engineering。

To reverse engineer is to look beyond what is evident on the surface and find a hidden structure。 It’s the ability to taste an intoxicating dish and deduce its recipe, to listen to a beautiful song and discern its chord progression, to watch a horror film and grasp its narrative arc。

Using eye-opening examples of top performers—from Agatha Christie to Andy Warhol, Barack Obama to Serena Williams—and groundbreaking research on pattern recognition, skill acquisition, and creative genius, Friedman reveals the staggering power of reverse engineering and teaches you how to harness this vital skill for yourself。

You’ll learn how to take apart models you admire, pinpoint precisely what makes them work, and apply that knowledge to develop novel ideas, methods, and products that are uniquely your own。 Along the way, you’ll meet the culinary detective who exposes top-secret recipes, the burglar who can visit a bank and recreate its blueprints, and the celebrated artist who reverse engineered his way to the top of his profession without any formal education。

You don’t have to be a genius to achieve greatness, but you do need a method for getting there。 Bursting with unforgettable stories and actionable strategies, Decoding Greatness is an indispensable guide to learning from the best, improving your skills, and sparking breakthrough ideas。

Ton of good ideas and clever if very masculine stories。

I’ve never read anything from Friedman, so I didn’t know what to expect from this book, but it’s really good。 At the time of writing this, I just celebrated 9 years sober, and one of the biggest parts of my foundation was that I was able to learn from others who did what I wanted to accomplish。 Since then, I’ve tried to adapt it to all aspects of my life, and that’s exactly what this book from Ron Friedman is all about。 Through scientific and psychological research。 Friedman argues that we can l I’ve never read anything from Friedman, so I didn’t know what to expect from this book, but it’s really good。 At the time of writing this, I just celebrated 9 years sober, and one of the biggest parts of my foundation was that I was able to learn from others who did what I wanted to accomplish。 Since then, I’ve tried to adapt it to all aspects of my life, and that’s exactly what this book from Ron Friedman is all about。 Through scientific and psychological research。 Friedman argues that we can learn from people who came before us, and he provides some solid anecdotes along the way。 Aside from great strategies for reverse engineering from others, I really liked the second half of this book because he has a whole chapter on managing risk as well as how we can get better at taking feedback。 I don’t even know if I have a criticism of this book aside from the fact that it’d be interesting to hear a conversation between Friedman and Duncan Watts。 While there are some formulas and steps you can follow from others who are successful, luck and many other factors play a massive role as well。 So, while I highly recommend that people read this book, I also think it’s important to round out your analysis of this type of strategy by getting the full perspective on the balance between hard work and factors beyond our control。 。。。more

A fascinating read。 The book applies to business but includes illustrations that inspire writers and speakers and could even be applied to personal life。 The author explains how to examine (decode) something you admire—whether it’s a book, a speaker or something that has brought someone success。 Then he explains how to dissect their approach to understand what makes it tick。 However, you don’t just “copy” the elements; you insert your own style/behavior/etc。 The subtitle explains the content: Ho A fascinating read。 The book applies to business but includes illustrations that inspire writers and speakers and could even be applied to personal life。 The author explains how to examine (decode) something you admire—whether it’s a book, a speaker or something that has brought someone success。 Then he explains how to dissect their approach to understand what makes it tick。 However, you don’t just “copy” the elements; you insert your own style/behavior/etc。 The subtitle explains the content: How the Best in the World Reverse Engineer Success。 Chapters deal with topics such as visualization and talking to experts to better appreciate their approach。I especially loved the stories。 The can-you-top-this competition of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates。 The transformation of Barach Obama’s speaking style。 The song-writing of Roy Orbison。 The journey of artist Vincent van Gogh。 Even the careful study and planning of a master bank robber。Here’s an interesting nugget: When groups of students were scored after one group read material that was clearly printed and another group read material that was blurred or faint, the latter had better recall。 Evidently difficulty in reading helps knowledge stick。 Who knew? And that’s just one example from the book。Published in 2021 by Simon & Schuster, the book is quite readable and very informative。 I highly recommend it for anyone seeking to better themselves in any area of their lives。 。。。more

An insanely useful trove of immediately actionable tools & deep insights conveyed through memorable stories of the greatsDid you know that Barack Obama used to be terrible at public speaking? That Stan Lee almost quit writing comics around age 40? That after a slump and injury, Roger Federer took almost a year off to revamp his entire game to become the greatest of all time? Well I did not, which is part of why I enjoyed "Decoding Greatness" enough to have read it twice already! But the even bigger reason for my enthusiasm for the book is its giant trove of deep, sometimes counterintuitive, always actionable insights about how you, too, can achieve world-class results。 This is a book about reverse engineering success — also known as emulating those who are great at what they do so you can get similar results。 Friedman expertly structures the book to make its life-altering information easy to digest, reference, and implement。Heck, I've already implemented not one but *two* of its suggestions (and it's still the release day)。 For one, if journaling is good enough for Thomas Edison, Michael Phelps, and Serena Williams, I figure it's good enough for me。 So I just acquired my first-ever 5-year journal。 I'll also be tracking my own performance in various realms to find more "leading indicators。"Some other super-useful techniques:• Reverse outlining: To write a great article or book, read then break down the structure of the best works in the genre。 Then, emulate that structure。• Totally new stuff tends to bomb; people actually prefer the familiar。 So for maximum creative success, you want "optimal newness" -- something that's "derivative with a twist。"• Visualization is miraculously effective! Just make sure you visualize the whole process of doing the thing。 If you just visualize standing on the damn podium, that's actually counterproductive。 Optimal dose: 20min/day。• Reflective practice: This is so huge。 “We’ve been taught that education occurs from the outside in—that learning happens through exposure to new information。 But that’s only half the equation。 Reviewing past events with an eye for insights, patterns, and predictions is how we turn experience into wisdom。”I also appreciate all the tools that Friedman casually drops in that I had no idea existed。 Want to see all the chord progressions for any pop song? Get the Capo 3 app! All the parts of every car in the world? The A2Mac1 website has you covered! And then there's the epic, word-by-word breakdown of the late Sir Ken Robinson's greatest TED talk of all time。Of course, there's even more in there: the science of giving and receiving useful feedback; cognitive task analysis; how to interview an expert to get actually useful information (harder than you think); and my favorite — pressure acclimatization training, as exemplified by speed cuber Dan Knights and basketball god Stephen Curry。As a coach, therapist, and performer, I'm a huge fan of the literature of high performance, and this book is now one of my favorites。 Implementing any one of its dozens of science-backed ideas is bound to measurably improve your game。 Do more than that, and who knows how far you'll go! "Re-read great books often", another of the book's recommendations, is one I'll be applying to this one regularly。 Get one copy for yourself and one for the favorite budding performer in your life。-- Ali Binazir, M。D。, M。Phil。, Happiness Engineer and author of The Tao of Dating: The Smart Woman's Guide to Being Absolutely Irresistible, the highest-rated dating book on Amazon, and Should I Go to Medical School?: An Irreverent Guide to the Pros and Cons of a Career in Medicine 。。。more

Dr。 Friedman's latest book is superb!
